Breast augmentation can be life-changing for women that dislike the naturally small size or asymmetry of their breasts. Breast implants are a safe and effective way to boost cup size and create a sexier-looking bust.
However, implants are not a universal solution to every concern or complaint. It is crucial that prospective breast augmentation candidates understand implants have their limitations.
Here, Dr. Carlos Chacon of Divino Plastic Surgery reviews some of the problems that breast implants cannot fix.
Suboptimal Breast Position
Breast implants don’t fix the appearance of breasts that are in a low or sagging position on the chest. Implants can fill out small or asymmetrical breasts, adding more fullness to the upper pole (portion) of the breast, but they don’t have any effect on the breast position.
Augmented breasts that sagged before surgery usually look even saggier after surgery, as the implants stretch out the loose skin and weigh down the breast, accentuating the sagging.
The better solution to suboptimal breast position is breast lift (mastopexy), which tightens loose skin, repositions the breast tissue higher on the chest and removes excess skin.
It is extremely common to have downward-pointing nipples, usually due to stretched-out, loose breast skin. Downward-pointing nipples can be corrected surgically — just not through breast implants. Filling out the breasts has no effect on the position and direction of the nipples.
Breast lift (mastopexy) is the more appropriate procedure to fix downward-pointing nipples. The breasts themselves are elevated higher on the chest wall and the nipples are fixed so they point straight ahead or slightly upward.
A Bad Relationship
Dr. Chacon sees women that request breast implants (and other plastic surgery procedures) because they want to save a failing relationship. Every candidate is asked about her motivations and intentions for surgery. Women that believe breast implants are a Band-Aid for relationship problems are encouraged to re-evaluate their decisions.
A relationship that hinges on breast size has bigger underlying problems that cannot be fixed with implants. Breast implants can give a woman more confidence, but they won’t instantly transform her life or eliminate interpersonal problems.
