What is a Labiablasty Procedure?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to shape and trim the outer lips of the vagina (labia majora), the inner lips (labia minora), or both. The labia majora are the parts of the labia on the outside of the body. The labia minora are the inner flaps of skin that cover the clitoris and vagina. The labia can become asymmetrical or elongated as a result of genetics, sexual intercourse, childbirth or the natural aging process.

Why Consider a Labiablasty?

The anatomy of the external female genitalia can vary significantly for each woman. Like breast size, the desired appearance will vary by individual preferences and existing needs.

The best candidates for labiaplasty are healthy women who are either experiencing embarrassment, sexual dysfunction, or pain because their labia (labia minora) are oversized or asymmetrical. The purpose is to reduce the size and improve the outside appearance.

What Kind of Results to Expect From Labiablasty?

  • Boost self-confidence
  • Reduce discomfort caused by clothing
  • Improve the appearance of the vagina and vulva
  • Reduce discomfort during intercourse and exercise

Labiaplasty Details

Labiaplasty BonitaYour doctor generally uses one of two approaches to correct an enlarged labia: the trim technique or wedge labiaplasty.

With the trim technique, the doctor carefully removes some of the excess tissue around the perimeter of your labia minora so that it is either the same size as or slightly smaller than your labia majora. It is an especially effective technique if you are dissatisfied with having darker-toned edges on your labia. Your doctor can also improve symmetry with this technique.

Wedge labiaplasty is the more complicated approach. First, the surgeon carefully removes a V-shaped section (or wedge) from the center of your labia. The surgeon then stitches the labia back together, which has a tightening/shrinking effect. It does nothing to address the pigmentation on the edge of the labia, however.

Labiaplasty typically lasts about two hours. Labiaplasty is an outpatient procedure, which means you can rest and recover at home.

What is Recovery From a Labiablasty Procedure Like?

  • Resting the day of surgery is recommended
  • Patients may experience minor discomfort and mild swelling
  • Patients should abstain from sexual activity for 6-8 weeks due to the sensitivity of the repair
  • Patients may return to work within a few days to one week, depending upon your activity level

Labiaplasty FAQ

Why do some women have enlarged labia?

For many women, the large size of the labia minor is due to genetics. Others see the size of their labia change over time. Aging, particularly during periods of fluctuating hormones around menopause, can cause the skin to become thinner, looser, and even darker in color. The labia also tend to swell and become darker during pregnancy; for some women the skin may not retighten after.

While such changes are normal, what matters is how these changes make you feel. If the appearance of your labia no longer makes you feel confident and sexy, vaginal rejuvenation may be appropriate.

How much does labiaplasty cost?

Labiaplasty Procedure BonitaPrices vary depending on the patient. Your doctor can provide a quote during a consultation after assessing the amount of tissue that needs removal and the appropriate approach for the procedure.

Does labiaplasty leave any scarring?

Because labiaplasty involves incisions, a moderate amount of scarring is expected. The good news is that because of their location, the scars become virtually unnoticeable over time.

What is the difference between the labia majora and the labia minora?

The labia minora is the inner set of vaginal lips. The labia majora is the outer set of vaginal lips, which are fleshier and covered in pubic hair. Most of the cosmetic changes that women request are for the labia minora, although it is possible to improve the aesthetics of the labia majora as well.

Aside from labiaplasty, what other intimate enhancements are available?

Women who are concerned with the size and appearance of their labia majora can undergo an outer labia reduction or a labial puff procedure to give it more youthful volume. Vaginoplasty focuses on tightening the vaginal canal for greater sexual satisfaction. Another way to intensify orgasms is with the injectable treatments G-Shot or O-Shot.

With age, women also find that loose skin and fat can accumulate in this area. Pubic lift trims the bulge that forms just above the vagina, while clitoral hood reduction removes some of the extra skin covering the clitoris to improve access for greater sexual satisfaction.
