The majority of women who undergo breast augmentation surgery are very satisfied with their fuller and larger breasts. In some cases, however, women are not happy with their results, or they develop a complication with their implants that requires breast implant removal and/or replacement.
Dr. Carlos Chacon of Divino Plastic Surgery in San Diego is the trusted choice for women who are interested in breast revision, including those who are no longer happy with their current breast implants and desire another size. In this blog post, Dr. Chacon explains what you can expect when replacing breast implants with a larger pair.
Reasons for Replacing Breast Implants with a Larger Size
But first, let’s look at some of the reasons for replacing breast implants with a different size. In some cases, women decide to go with one size and realize they should have gone with another size soon after their initial surgery. Other women are very happy with their initial results but experience changes to the size, shape and position of their breasts over time. Factors such as weight fluctuations, genetics and the natural aging process may cause the breasts to become deflated and lose their once full and voluminous appearance.
Undergoing Breast Implant Revision Surgery
It is recommended that patients wait at least one year after their initial breast augmentation surgery before undergoing breast revision. When replacing breast implants with a larger pair, the surgeon will need to surgically enlarge the breast pocket (or space in the breast) that held the initial implant so it can accommodate the larger one. When possible, the incision sites used for the initial breast augmentation procedure will be used for the revision procedure. This limits the need for additional incisions, which would result in additional scarring.
Breast revision can be combined with breast lift to create more aesthetically pleasing results. Breast lift removes loose, sagging skin and raises the breast mound and areola to a higher and more youthful position on the chest wall. Dr. Chacon can discuss this option with you during your consultation.
