When an Eyelid Surgery Addresses More Than Just a Cosmetic Issue
Posted on June 13, 2014 by Dr. Carlos Chacon - Eyelid Surgery
Every so often, an eyelid surgery may be perceived as a cosmetic procedure. There’s no doubt that it can make your eyes look more refreshed and youthful. However, here at our San Diego facial rejuvenation practice, we also perform eyelid surgeries because it’s medically necessary.
Eyelid Surgery to Correct Obstructed Vision
Aside from the usual cosmetic reasons such as eye bags and puffiness of the lower eyelids, patients also seek Dr. Chacon’s expertise in an eyelids surgery to help them correct obstructed vision brought about by overly drooping eyelids.
So what exactly causes drooping eyelids? By and large, it has largely to do with collagen loss that frequently occurs with aging. Collagen is mainly responsible for the plump, smooth appearance of the skin that is associated with youthfulness and optimum skin health. Additionally, it makes up roughly 75 percent of your skin and may dwindle in number as you age.
Furthermore, as your skin’s collagen content diminishes, the muscles underneath the skin also tend to weaken and lose definition. Lastly, excess pockets of fat can also accumulate leading to the appearance of puffiness.
Obstructed peripheral vision is often the result of overly droopy eyelids. Your peripheral vision is responsible for helping you see and appreciate objects up and above.
The Ideal Candidate for Eyelid Surgery
Generally, the ideal candidate for an eyelid surgery should in excellent shape, both physically and mentally. In addition, certain medical conditions should be addressed and/or stabilized first such as hypertension, dry eye syndrome, glaucoma, thyroid disorders, cardiovascular problems, and diabetes. Lastly, one’s facial anatomy may also affect one’s candidacy for the procedure.
An eyelid surgery can either be done alone or in conjunction with other facial rejuvenation procedures — from a forehead lift to minimally invasive procedures such as laser resurfacing procedures to chemical peels.
