Facelift for Men – Special Considerations

Facelift for Men – Special ConsiderationsPlastic surgery continues to surge in popularity among men, who, like women, want to look and feel good about their appearance. Facelifts for men offer the same benefits as facelifts for women: tighter skin, a reduction in wrinkles and a more youthful appearance. However, as Dr. Carlos Chacon of Divino Plastic Surgery in San Diego explains here, facelifts for men require special consideration.

The Procedure Itself

Generally speaking, men wear their hair shorter, with less hair to conceal any scarring. In addition, facial hair growth must be considered. For example, the skin around the ears should be carefully lifted and a small patch of non-hair bearing skin should be preserved at the base of the ear to prevent the need to shave too close to the earlobe.

Men also have larger faces, more vascular skin and resilient ligament support, making a male facelift procedure considerably more challenging than a female facelift. Like women, men wish to avoid looking like they’ve had surgery. Instead, they want to look younger and more chiseled. This is why surgeon selection is so important — an inexperienced or careless surgeon could overcorrect the face, feminizing it. Luckily, this is not a concern with Dr. Chacon.

The Male Psyche

Men, in most cases, want facial plastic surgery to be a private affair. Most men don’t share the fact they are having a facelift with their best buds. Men aren’t societally conditioned in the same way women are in relation to their appearance either, and this is an important consideration for men when choosing to have “a little work done.” Men should select a physician who is compassionate yet discreet about their motivation for having facial surgery.

Post-operative Considerations

In men, bruising is less of a consideration due to the thickness of their skin. On the other hand, blood pressure control can be a postoperative concern for men, and potential hematoma complications. For this reason, drains are used, often alongside compression dressings, to avoid complications.
