Four Surprising Uses for Botox
Posted on September 9, 2015 by Dr. Carlos Chacon - Botox
While Botox is most commonly known for vanquishing visible signs of aging on the face, the benefits of this injectable don’t stop there. In this blog post, Dr. Carlos Chacon of Divino Plastic Surgery reveals some of the unexpected uses — and benefits — of Botox.
Excessive Sweating
If you are constantly embarrassed by excessive underarm sweating, Botox can help. Botox is FDA-approved to treat severe armpit sweating and can be injected into the sweat glands under the skin to temporarily block chemical signals from the nerves that stimulate sweat glands. The results are temporary, however, and can last up to seven months.
Eyelid Twitching
One of the first FDA-approved uses for Botox was treatment for blepharospasm, also known as eyelid twitching. Uncontrollable eyelid blinking or twitching can be distressing, and lead to dry eyes or uncontrollable movements in other areas of the face. Botox injections temporarily paralyze the muscles underneath the eyelids, stopping the abnormal eyelid spasms. Because results are temporary, many patients choose to have follow-up Botox treatments every three to four months.
Migraines
People who suffer chronic migraine headaches (15 or more headache-days a month) can find some pain relief with Botox. Studies have shown the injectable treatment can eradicate up to nine headache-days a month. Other studies have found Botox can also treat cluster headaches, a type of severe headache that recurs over a period time and typically affects one side of the head. One study found Botox alleviated pain relief for up to eight months among people who had cluster headaches.
Overactive Bladder
Having an overactive bladder is more common than you may think; urinary incontinence affects one in five adults over age 40, according to the National Association of Continence. If you experience frequent leaking, urinating and feel the need to urinate right away, Botox can be injected into the wall of your bladder to relieve symptoms.
