Mommy Makeover Do’s and Don’ts

Posted on November 16, 2018 by - Mommy Makeover

Mommy makeover do’s and don’tsMommy makeover is a personalized body contouring treatment that addresses the cosmetic effects that pregnancy and breastfeeding have on a woman’s body and breasts. When planned and performed properly, mommy makeover can be life changing.

As one of San Diego’s top mommy makeover surgeons, Dr. Carlos Chacon of Divino Plastic Surgery regularly meets with women who wish to restore their pre-baby bodies. Here, he shares important do’s and don’ts all prospective patients should know before undergoing mommy makeover.

Before Mommy Makeover

Do your research. Not all mommy makeover treatments are the same. Before committing to mommy makeover, take plenty of time to research the treatment and understand what procedures are involved and what they can and cannot accomplish. If you have questions about what goes on during surgery, what results to expect or the risks associated with mommy makeover, your surgeon can discuss your concerns in detail.

Don’t cut corners on your pre-op preparation. Your surgeon will provide you with a detailed list of instructions to follow before your surgery. This may include guidelines on when to stop taking certain medications, when to stop smoking and what to do the morning of your surgery. Not following your doctor’s instructions before surgery can increase the risk of a complication during and after mommy makeover.

Do prep for recovery ahead of time. Immediately after your surgery, your energy levels will be low and your mobility will be restricted. For these reasons, it is a good idea to prepare your recovery station before your mommy makeover. Set up your bed or couch with plenty of clean bed sheets, blankets and pillows. Place all necessary items near or on your bed or couch, including oral pain medication, TV remote and water.

Do ask for help. Having a loved one watch after you and help you with childcare, pets, household chores and errands helps make the recovery go more smoothly.

After Mommy Makeover

Do start walking when you feel ready. While getting plenty of bed rest is important during the first two weeks of recovery, you are encouraged to take short walks in your home once you feel ready. Short walks help promote good blood circulation, which is important during recovery.

Don’t resume exercise without doctor approval. Engaging in strenuous activities, including exercise, bending and heavy lifting, too soon after your mommy makeover can increase the risk of complications. Your surgeon will determine when it is safe for you to resume exercise and other physical activities.

Don’t skip follow-up appointments. Follow-up appointments with your surgeon are important so he or she can monitor your healing progress and make recommendations or modifications to your recovery to ensure you heal as safely and quickly as possible.

Do be patient. While the initial results of your surgery will be noticeable almost immediately, it can take up to a year for the final effects to be visible. Be patient with your body and the recovery process — the results will be worth it!
