Most Popular Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Procedures
Posted on August 18, 2018 by Dr. Carlos Chacon - Nonsurgical Treatment
Plastic surgery is more popular than ever, and minimally invasive procedures are leading the way, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). The organization’s latest report revealed that of the total 17.5 million cosmetic procedures performed in 2017, a whopping 15.7 million of them were non-surgical.
Divino Plastic Surgery is a top San Diego plastic surgery practice that offers both surgical and non-surgical cosmetic treatments to fulfill the diverse needs of patients. Here, Dr. Carlos Chacon reveals the top minimally invasive procedures according to the ASPS.
Botox was not only the top minimally invasive procedure of 2017, it was also the top cosmetic procedure period. There were 7.23 million Botox procedures performed, a 3 percent increase from the previous year. Known as the “lunchtime treatment” by many, Botox is a quick procedure that temporarily relaxes the facial muscles to smooth out the overlying facial wrinkles. Both men and women love Botox because results are almost instantaneous, side effects are minimal and no downtime is required. Botox can be used as a standalone treatment, in combination with another procedure or as a way to maintain the results of a more invasive procedure like facelift or eyelid surgery.
Dermal fillers came in second place, with 2.69 million procedures performed. Versatile in use, dermal fillers restore volume into hollow or sunken facial areas, or can be used to fill in noticeable facial lines and wrinkles. Depending on the specific product, fillers can last anywhere between a few months and two years.
Approximately 1.37 million chemical peels were performed in 2017. An exfoliative treatment, chemical peels slough off old and dull skin cells on the superficial layers of the skin to reveal healthier and fresher skin. Chemical peels vary in strength and our medspa team can recommend one based on your unique skin type and needs.
Rounding out the top five was microdermabrasion with over 740,000 procedures performed. Like chemical peels, microdermabrasion sheds the dull superficial layers of the skin to make way for younger, healthier skin. Microdermabrasion uses a diamond-tipped wand to gently remove the top layers of skin. This mild abrasion triggers the body’s collagen regeneration process to create softer and firmer skin.
