There has never been a better time to undergo plastic surgery to address features that make you self-conscious. Plastic surgery technology and techniques have improved substantially over the past few decades, leading to safer treatment, faster recovery and better results.
Statistics from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) — the world’s largest plastic surgery organization and the leading source of accurate information about plastic surgery — show that Americans are taking advantage of these improvements. According to the ASPS, a record 1.8 million cosmetic surgical procedures were performed last year.
Curious about the most popular procedures? Read on as Dr. Carlos Chacon from Divino Plastic Surgery reveals what Americans are requesting.
Nearly 300,000 breast augmentation procedures were performed in 2019. Breast augmentation has been the top plastic surgery procedure in the United States since 2006. Eighty-five percent of surgeries performed last year used silicone implants and 15 percent used saline implants.
Over 265,000 liposuction procedures were performed last year. More than 30,000 of those procedures were performed on men in pursuit of a sculpted, muscular physique.
Eyelid surgery was the third most popular plastic surgery procedure in 2019, accounting for 211,005 procedures. Some plastic surgeons actually predict an uptick in eyelid surgery procedures in 2020, claiming patients are more focused on the appearance of their eyes due to wearing masks.
Nose reshaping, or rhinoplasty, helped over 207,000 patients enjoy a more aesthetically pleasing nose in 2019. Rhinoplasty with Dr. Chacon can completely reshape or resize the nose, positively impacting patients’ self-esteem and confidence.
Rounding out the top five plastic surgery procedures for 2019 is facelift, with 123,685 facelift procedures performed last year. Like eyelid surgery, facelift surgery may see a spike in popularity in 2020, as video conferencing platforms like Zoom and FaceTime bring more attention to perceived facial imperfections.
Popular Minimally Invasive Cosmetic Procedures
ASPS statistics reveal that Americans also took advantage of non-surgical treatments to improve their appearance. Over 16.3 million minimally invasive procedures were performed last year.
According to ASPS, the top five minimally invasive procedures included:
- Botox – 7.7 million procedures performed
- Dermal fillers – 2.7 million procedures performed
- Chemical peel – 1.3 million procedures performed
- Laser hair removal – 1 million procedures performed
- Intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments – 685,755 procedures performed
