What Men Should Know About Plastic Surgery

Posted on January 1, 2019 by - Male Plastic Surgery

What men should know about plastic surgeryThe thought that only women undergo plastic surgery is an outdated stereotype, which is luckily being turned on its head. Increasingly, men are enjoying the benefits of male cosmetic procedures that help them look and feel their best. Below, San Diego plastic surgeon Dr. Carlos Chacon discusses what men should know about plastic surgery.

Different Bodies, Different Technique

While men and women are equally suited to undergoing plastic surgery, there are several basic differences when it comes to what to expect. Here are some reasons why cosmetic surgeries differ between men and women:

  • Men tend to have thicker skin than women. This requires a slightly different surgical technique for most procedures, and can also lengthen recovery time.
  • Men and women store fat differently. Procedures such as liposuction are approached differently between the two genders for this reason.
  • While the aesthetic differences in men’s and women’s bodies may appear obvious from the outside, there are also numerous muscular differences.

Surgery Does Not Replace the Gym

Plastic surgery can help you achieve body goals that the gym can’t fulfill alone, but nothing can replace a regular exercise routine. A healthy lifestyle including a balanced diet and consistent exercise is the foundation for a well-toned body. Liposuction and tummy tuck (abdominoplasty) can help you restore a more masculine and youthful figure by removing stubborn pockets of fat that become harder to get rid of with age. However, regular exercise is necessary to keep the fat from coming back.

Experience is Key

Due to the inherent differences between the male and female figures, it is very important to find a surgeon who is experienced in male cosmetic procedures. A surgeon who operates only on women may not be able to offer the attention to detail and expertise required for the best possible results. Look for a  plastic surgeon with ample experience performing the procedures you desire on men. Ask to see before-and-after photos of the surgeon’s previous work to get a more thorough familiarity with the type of work he or she offers, and to confirm that it aligns with your personal body goals.
