What to Expect After Liposuction: Recovery and Results

Posted on September 1, 2019 by - Liposuction

Liposuction recovery and resultsEarlier this year, rapper Cardi B talked openly and honestly about undergoing liposuction. Among her biggest takeaways from getting the procedure done? Results take time.

She made a very good point worth talking about. One of the most common misconceptions about liposuction β€” and plastic surgery in general β€” is that results are immediate. The truth is that the final results from liposuction can take several months to appear.

Below, San Diego plastic surgeon Dr. Carlos Chacon explains what to expect after liposuction, including recovery and results.

Recovery

What aftereffects should I expect?

Immediately after liposuction, you will experience some mild discomfort, swelling and bruising. Your surgeon can prescribe medication to help ease discomfort. Wearing a compression garment can help reduce swelling and support the tissues as they heal. The majority of swelling, bruising and discomfort should disappear at the one- or two-week mark of recovery.

When can I return to work?

Most patients should expect to take anywhere from a couple of days to one week off from work and all other activities, including exercise. However, every patient heals at a different pace. Your surgeon can provide you with a personalized timeline of when it is safe to return to work and resume all other activities.

Results

When will I see results?

The initial effects of liposuction will become noticeable once the majority of swelling and side effects have disappeared, which typically takes up to two weeks after surgery. Depending on how much fat was removed and your personal healing progress, you may see the final results anywhere between three months to a year after surgery.

What about scarring?

Scars from liposuction tend to be small, as the incisions made during the procedure are small. When possible, Dr. Chacon will place the incisions on skin creases or areas where scarring can be easily concealed with clothing. Dr. Chacon and our team will also provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your scars to ensure that they heal and fade quickly.

How can I maintain my results?

Once fat cells are removed from the body, they cannot return. That being said, weight gain is possible after liposuction. You can maintain your slimmer physique by practicing a healthy lifestyle (i.e., eating a well-balanced diet and exercising regularly).
